Heathrow Terminal 5 airport expansion: Rail and road infrastructure enhancements

We’ve delivered a transformative extension of Heathrow airport’s railways and road infrastructure to streamline travel, accommodate increasing passenger demand, and reinforce Heathrow's position as a world-class airport.

Heathrow airport is the UK's largest airport, serving 89 million passengers annually. In collaboration with the British Airport Authorities (BAA), we successfully delivered the complex extension of the Heathrow Express and Piccadilly Line railways, the fit-out of T5 Rail Station and interchange, the T5 Track Transit System and stations, and the construction of a new 1km M25 spur road.

Three new railway stations and four rail tunnels seamlessly connect the existing Central Terminal Area Stations to Terminal 5 (T5). As well as enhancing rail connectivity, the new M25 spur road, along with the widening of the M25 between junctions 1215 and the alignment of the road around the western perimeter of the site significantly improves transport links to the airport. Additionally, internal airside roads and connections to the existing road transport network further support efficient access.

Leveraging our Group’s multi-disciplinary expertise, we provided a range of design and construction solutions, including:

  • Rail Engineering: Design, supply, and installation of 10km of new track, seamlessly integrated with existing railways.

  • Rail Traction Power: Design and installation of a 25kV overhead line system for the Heathrow Express and 9,800m of composite conductor rail for the Piccadilly Line.

  • Civil Engineering: Design and construction of the M25 widening (junctions 12â€15), a new 1km spur road into T5, and the re-alignment of the western perimeter road.

  • Construction: Installation of a 3,500ft² station roof and bridge links.

Collaboration and innovationÌý

Effective coordination and communication were crucial to ensure the airport remained operational throughout the duration of the project.Ìý Early adoption of BIM tools helped mitigate interface risks and added value in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment. During planning and design, we worked together with HOK Architects to deliver live project information. Joint 4D BIM workshops ensured on-time and on-budget delivery, particularly in the interchange area, where physical connections with other contractorsâ€ projects were critical. The use of 4D planning streamlined the delivery of design information, aligning fabrication and installation schedules across projects. Thereby enabling a ‘right first timeâ€ methodology as all parties were working within tight time and space constraints.Ìý
